Jin Seal – Lime Sulfur
For all it can offer, bonsai deadwood is inherently vulnerable to weathering, decay, discoloring, and breakage.
Our Ho Yoku Jin Seal helps protect these features and restores a fresh appearance to deadwood. Just as toothpaste cleans, whitens, and preserves teeth, so too does Ho Yoku’s Jin Seal work on non-living wood in trees.
Traditionally, deadwood in bonsai has been used to create visual interest, a sense of age, austerity, beauty, shape, survival, and more. In nature, deadwood occurs when trees are struck by lightening or damaged by some manner of force/impact.
Depending on the material, bonsai may come with accidental/incidental deadwood, or deadwood features can be added with tools and techniques.
Common manifestations of deadwood in bonsai are: “Jin” which is a branch or apex that has died and been stripped of bark; “Shari” which are sections of a bonsai’s trunk that have been scraped of living tissue; and “Uro” which are hollows in the trunk of a tree.
All three of these deadwood features need cleaning and preservation.
Directions:
Ho Yoku Jin Seal has a strong odor. It can stain clothes, hands, and should not spread outside of deadwood. Use of gloves, goggles, and selecting a well-ventilated, outdoor, location is recommended. Shake bottle before use.
For application, dip the provided brush into the Jin Seal and paint the desired area fully with liquid. After applying to deadwood, use a clean cloth or paper towel to wipe off any excess Jin Seal.
At first, this substance will make wood appear yellow, but that color will fade leaving an attractive bleached look.
For best and fastest results, apply Ho Yoku’s Jin Seal on warm days with bonsai placed in full sun. Allow this substance to permeate and dry fully before getting deadwood areas wet from rain or watering.
It is sometimes helpful to hold a flat surface or cloth under the application site if there is risk of Jin Seal dripping onto foliage or runoff to other areas of the bonsai. Wash/flush any parts of bonsai where Jin Seal has spilled or dripped.
If left to dry, Jin Seal can discolor bark, or damage the leaves and needles of trees that were accidentally dripped on.
Caution:
Use only as directed. Keep away from children and pets. Do not ingest, inhale, or allow contact of Jin Seal to skin. Store in a safe, cool, place. This is a potent and potentially harmful product if misused.
Each bottle of Ho Yoku Jin Seal comes ready to use without dilution or additives.
